There’s been a lot of talk about the descent of Liz Lemon and 30 Rock this season. I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t been the biggest fan of this season and so I agreed with the backlash articles in Salon and NPR. However, last week’s Batman parody/ crazy subway lady episode was one of their strongest episodes EVER and made me excited about the show all over again. Perfect timing for me to read Emily Nussbaum’s predictably well-articulated defense of Liz (and Tina Fey) in The New Yorker.

A few days ago, I finished the first series of Downton Abbey. I grew up watching a lot of British television like House of Eliott, Keeping Up Appearances, and Upstairs, Downstairs, and so Downton feels very familiar and comforting to me. The show is endlessly entertaining and really almost soapy with its twists and turns and secrets. I’m eager to start watching the second series, but for the meantime:

A good, short New Yorker piece by Rebecca Mead.

Salon questions why liberals love the show.

Vanity Fair has a feature on the show and also a behind-the-scenes slideshow.

Vogue has a piece on the costumes.

American Horror Story is one of the few new fall dramas that I am still watching (Pan Am, Terra Nova, and Once Upon A Time have all been brushed aside for various reasons.) AHS is far from perfect; it’s loopy, messy, inconsistent, campy, but at least half of those adjectives are also what makes it compelling and extremely watchable.
New York magazine and Salon recently published essays on the show that I enjoyed reading.

With the release of her new book, Bossypants, this week has been a full-on Tina Fey media blitz. Not that I am complaining. Here are links to some of my favorite stories:
Tina & Me in the NYT’s Style section by Curtis Sittenfeld.
Tina answers the Proust Questionnaire in Vanity Fair.
On Tina Fey’s pregnancy and feminism in Salon.
Entertainment Weekly’s Bossypants review.
The National Post looks at three other comedian-scribed memoirs.
And finally, although it’s not new, the best Tina Fey profile I’ve ever read, by Virginia Heffernan in The New Yorker back in 2003.
